Our road construction unit has been a fun, high-interest theme. But any construction theme is typically high interest. Here are some of our favorite construction books, featuring road construction books and including construction books of all kinds.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Look Inside the Book” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).
Books for a Construction Theme
I’m featuring books here for a construction theme mainly for preschool through elementary-age kids. The books on our forward-facing shelf are all Montessori-friendly books.
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- The Ultimate Construction Site Book is perfect for children who love little details and are able to handle moving parts, since this book has over 60 lift-the-flaps, pop-ups, and pull-tabs. My 5-year-old grandson, Caleb, is in love with it!
- New Road! (only available used)
- Building Roads has lots of easy-to-understand information
2nd Shelf:
- A Book of Bridges: Here to There – and Me to You
- Building Landmarks – Bridges, Tunnels and Landmarks
- Building Bridges has many fun STEM ideas for bridge building along with information about many types of bridges.
3rd Shelf:
- Roadwork by Sally Sutton is a fun book that features repetition, rhyme, and onomatopoeias.
- Dirt Machines: Heavy-Duty Construction Vehicles
- Big Machines
4th Shelf:
Bottom Shelf

Across the room, we have some favorite fiction and nonfiction construction and vehicle books that aren’t all specifically related to road construction.
On our shelf is:
- Iggy Peck, Architect (The beginning of a great series!)
- Rosie Revere, Engineer (With lots of great related books!)
- Road Crew, Coming Through! (This isn’t a Montessori-style book, but it’s a fun book with lots of information about road construction.)
- Dump Truck Disco (This isn’t a Montessori-style book, but it’s part of the fabulous Barefoot Books Singalongs, a series my grandkids were obsessed with as toddlers and young preschoolers.)
Some other construction books we’re using that are in a book basket:
- Roadwork pages from The Big Book of Things That Go by DK (a great book for vehicle lovers).
- At the Construction Site pages from National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Things That Go. The book has lots of easy-to-understand information about vehicles of all kinds.
- 13 Bridges Children Should Know
