I’ve been asked a number of times for recommendations for Montessori baby rooms and floor beds.
Here’s a post I wrote about what we did in our own home:
How to Set Up Your Home for an Infant by Using Montessori Principles
I’ve done some research online to see what other parents have done to create a Montessori home environment for their babies. Each family needs to decide what is best for their unique situation. Babies might have their own room or a place in the family’s living room. The family might use co-sleeping for part or all of the night with the baby using the Montessori room or space mainly during the daytime.
Common attributes of Montessori baby rooms:
- a baby-proofed space that is safe for the baby to move and explore
- a floor bed
- a mobile above the floor bed
- a mirror attached to the wall or a horizontal mirror
- low pictures on the walls
- low shelves
- child-sized furniture
- natural materials wherever possible
- gate at the doorway so the door can be left open

Thank you so much for this post and all of the great links. I didn’t know about infant Montessori until it was too late for my daughter but if I have another one this info will be so helpful.

Thanks! I’m excited that all these links are online for when my grown-up kids have babies! 🙂

Thanks so much for the link/mention. You bring up the very important point in that each family’s needs/decision about this will be different, which is so true. Great post!
Deb says
Thank you for your kind comment, Michelle! And thanks for sharing your experiences at your blog. So many parents have wanted to know about others’ experiences with floor beds, and it was great to be able to link to insightful posts from parents!

I know I’m really late to the comment party, but just stumbled across this post and have a great floor bed recommendation: we’ve used a twin size Sultan Tafjord from Ikea since birth. It’s large (and comfy!) enough that I’ve spent many hours sleeping on it too, and it’s super-low to the ground (~2″). Hope that helps some new moms looking for a recommendation!
Deb says
Thanks so much for your comment and recommendation, Jen! I LOVE hearing what works for other parents! 🙂

My husband and I are TTC and our now-14-month-old is in a Montessori-type room. I am concerned with how it will work with floor beds and a baby and toddler in the same room. We had some difficulty since we introduced the floor bed to Gabriel at 10 months and I wanted to avoid that by starting earlier with our second. Any suggestions as to how we can accomplish this safely? Separate rooms are not an option. 🙁 We will probably co-sleep initially, but with Gabriel it was only for 6-7 weeks until he slept through the night. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I cannot seem to find any resources online!
Deb says
Thanks for your comment, Kelsey! It’s great to hear that you’re using a floor bed with your toddler! I haven’t talked with anyone about a situation similar to yours, although it could work very well to have a baby and toddler in the same room. It all depends on how your children handle the situation, so you’ll probably have to play it by ear a bit.
I did have a large portion of the room where my baby’s floor bed was partitioned off to create a safe space for the baby. I don’t know if something like that would be helpful for you. Here’s another post with a bit about it: https://livingmontessorinow.com/2010/10/05/how-to-set-up-your-home-for-an-infant-using-montessori-principles/.

I love your website! I could probably spend hours on it! The problem is I can’t seem to commit to Montessori method or implement it because I’m so inconsistent, unstructured, and procrastinate like crazy. I’ll set up some activities but not keep up wit it. How do I get myself together enough to implement Montessori and stick with it so my kids can grow up with the structure I never had.?
Tara says
I want a mirror like space for my almost 11 month old. We just put up some decorative mirror pieces above the floor bed. They are flower designs with cutouts. I’m wondering if the cutout design would be as beneficial as if we had full circles.
Taylor says
Thank you for all the great resources! Do you have any good suggestions for babyproofing things likeep lamps, humidifiers, etc in a baby’s Montessori nursery with a floor bed? Thanks!
