How We’re Using the Montessori-inspired Chinese New Year Printable Pack
My 5-year-old granddaughter Zoey and I had a chance to use just a few of the materials from the pack. First, I put some introductory Chinese New Year materials on a shelf that I can rotate throughout the holiday.
I used National Geographic Kids Pandas book along with a Schleich giant panda and Schleich giant panda cub as well as the Montessori continents globe. I like to include some activities from our panda unit for toddlers through kindergarteners whenever we study China. I plan to rotate these introductory activities with some of the printables from our unit last year.
Even though it’s not on the shelf, I love DK books and have Children Just Like Me: Celebrations! in a book basket. It’s a wonderful book for introducing Chinese New Year along and many other holidays. On the shelf, I have the National Geographic Kids Holidays Around the World: Celebrate Chinese New Year: With Fireworks, Dragons, and Lanterns. I have the series of National Geographic Kids Holidays Around the World books. They’re perfect for a wide variety of holidays.
As an introduction to Chinese New Year, I put out a pig card from the pack to emphasize 2019 as the Year of the Pig. I also placed a copy of the fu good fortune sign from the pack. I used one of the the other good fortune signs to prepare a Montessori-style sign-making tray.
For the sign-making tray, I printed a copy of the good fortune sign on red cardstock for Zoey. I had gold glitter glue, which Zoey used to cover the black with pretty gold glitter. Using the glue bottle is great for strengthening hands and fingers. Still, I think a gold glitter paint pen would give the best results. I ordered glitter paint pens for more work with this as well as many other crafts in the future.
We also worked with the Days of Chinese New Year Picture and Description Cards from the pack. It was fascinating for me to learn about each day, too! Zoey made a long timeline using the cards.
We’ll be adding more activities to our study of the Chinese New Year. I look forward to using the pack with Zoey and my younger grandkids for many years to come!
