Awesome DIY Water Table with Red, White, and Blue Activities

I’ve been in love with the DIY sensory table my daughter-in-law and I put together last September. Adding to its awesomeness is the fact that it can work as a DIY water table, too. So I decided to put together a patriotic water table with red, white, and blue activities for my 2½-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, this summer. (Note: If you live outside the United States, you can put together a water table with the colors of your country’s flag.)

DIY SENSORY TABLE

I love the DIY sensory tables my daughter-in-law, Chea, and I put together in September 2015! Zoey has one at her home and one at my home. They have different themes and activities.

To put together the DIY sensory table, we used the directions for “The $30, 30-Minute, Do-It-Yourself Sensory Table” from A Teaching Mommy. Ours cost a bit more than $30, although the price will vary according to where you get PVC pipe. We were able to get our PVC pipe at Lowe’s. We didn’t want to cut pipe and were lucky that the guys at Lowe’s were willing to cut it for us. Chea and I just turned all the PVC pipe sides with writing to the bottom and back.

I found the specified storage container for the sensory tables at Walmart.

The sensory table is designed to be disassembled. We found it best to hammer the pieces together after assembling the table to avoid having the table collapse. So ours are more permanent, which is fine. I have a sensory table available at all times on my balcony or next to my balcony door. Zoey is absolutely in love with sensory bins/tables!

My DIY sensory table has  been AMAZING! It was inexpensive to make, sturdy (still looks like new), and so versatile!

Materials Used for DIY Water Table with Red, White, and Blue Activities

I already had all the materials needed for this in my kitchen or in my educational materials bins, so I didn’t need to buy anything. I’ll add links where I can.

• DIY sensory table or water table (While I love using this as a table, you can just use the container on the floor.)
• plain water
• red and blue ice cube trays (I got mine at the Dollar Tree a couple of years ago.)
• measuring cups
• measuring spoons
• small containers (I got mine at the grocery store a few years ago.)
• practice golf balls
• ping pong balls
• wire strainer/scoop
• tongs (Mine were from The Dollar Tree, but you can find child-size tongs at Montessori Services.)
• eye dropper
• small glass pitcher/creamer
• small decanter
• stainless steel funnel
• Grow Capsules (Sea Animals) – I had an older version, but these should be very similar.

(Note: In case you’re wondering, Zoey’s outfit is from Gymboree.)

Feel free to adapt your water table for your family. These are just the materials I used.

Red, White, and Blue Practical Life Activities

It was fun adding a variety of practical life activities in the sensory bin … pouring, scooping, using an eye dropper, using tongs. Another time, I’ll change out some of the activities for making soapsuds with an eggbeater. The Grow Capsule sea animals were simply fun for a water table. 🙂

Zoey always works with her sensory bins for long periods of time. A water table is perfect outdoors in warm weather and can be used indoors at any time of year. Always fun and a great way to work on fine-motor skills!
