I never experienced dancing around a Maypole, but I have great memories of preparing May baskets as a child. May Day isn’t a very popular holiday in the United States today, but it is more popular in some parts of the world.
May Day provides schools and homeschools a great opportunity to study other cultures, create crafts, celebrate spring, celebrate friendships, and maybe even experience dance. Your child can also be taught the fun tradition of surprising a neighbor or loved one by hanging a May basket on his or her doorknob.
Since it’s almost May 1, I want to share some Montessori-inspired ideas for celebrating May Day from around the blogosphere.
Montessori-Inspired May Day Activities
May Day Curriculum Activities for the Montessori Classroom from North American Montessori Center
Ways to Celebrate May Day! from Montessori Mama
Maypole Dancing from How to Run a Home Daycare (great tutorial from a Waldorf-inspired home childcare/preschool)
May Day Crafts That Can Be Made into Montessori-Inspired Activities
Turning Valentine Crafts into Montessori-Oriented Activities has ideas that can be used to turn most May Day crafts for kids into Montessori-inspired activities.
I have a Kids’ May Day Activities Pinterest Board with lots of May Day baskets and other May Day activities.
Have a Happy May Day! 🙂
