Maria Montessori believed in giving children experiences in nature. In Montessori education, Earth Day principles are a natural part of everyday learning. Still, Earth Day is commonly observed in many Montessori Schools as an extra way to show respect for the earth and to build community.
Earth Day is April 22, making April a great time to combine a study of the earth with Earth Day activities. If you sign up for my mailing list, you’ll receive a free Montessori geography album created by Karen Tyler from Worldwide Montessori Online. The album contains 177 pages of geography activities to help preschoolers through early-elementary-age children understand the earth and their place on it.
Paint Your Own Earth Activity:
Paint Your Own Earth (the lovely activity in the photos) is from My Montessori Journey. This is a great activity after children are introduced to the Montessori land and water activity. If you don’t have access to the template from KidsSoup, here’s a royalty-free public domain clip art image that could be printed out and used to paint the land:
To download the earth image, click here, then right click on the image and choose “Save Picture As . . .”
And here’s the link to a black and white coloring page of the earth from DLTK’s Crafts for Kids.
