Non-Scary Day of the Dead Resources for Preschool Through Elementary

It can be difficult to know how to introduce Day of the Dead to young children. But Every Star Is Different has some wonderful resources. I’m excited to let you know about some great non-scary Day of the Dead printables for preschool through elementary!

Day of the Dead Mini Bundle from Every Star Is Different

Every Star Is Different has a new Day of the Dead Mini Bundle for preschool through elementary. I’ve been using some of the printables, and it’s awesome!

This is a shelf I prepared with a few of the printables along with the fabulous books Celebrations Around the World and Children Just Like Me: Celebrations, which I often use for holidays around the world.

My 3½-year-old grandson loves learning Spanish, so I made a booklet using the Day of the Dead Nomenclature Cards in Spanish with a description card in English behind each corresponding Spanish card. Then I laid the English cards out on the table. I showed the Spanish card, read the Spanish phrase, and read the description while Caleb found the corresponding card in English and then placed the English card in the card box. Caleb enjoyed the activity a lot. This  would work with a wide variety of ages!

My 7½-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, loves to play teacher, so I had her use the preposition symbol and preposition cards with her 3½-year-old sister, Sophia. Zoey simply asked Sophia to have the monarch butterfly fly above the flower, fly around the flower (as in the photo), etc. It was a great positional activity for Sophia and a perfect way for Zoey to review prepositions.

Then I had Zoey work  with the Day of the Dead preposition clip cards. Zoey said she really loved this activity. The Disney movie Coco was helpful in adding interest before we even began!

Sophia didn’t have any problems matching the Day of the Dead skulls and enjoyed looking at the variety of designs. This is a great activity for visual discrimination.

We’ve done quite a bit with human skeletons before, but we haven’t done animal skeletons. This was a fun activity that all three of my grandkids found fascinating. I used animal figures from the Safari Ltd. Wild TOOB, Farm TOOB (the horse), River TOOB, and Great Lakes TOOB to add to the animal picture and skeleton matching (with the exception of the crow, which I left out). You don’t need to use all the figures. We just love Safari Ltd. TOOBs and have a lot of them. The Book of Bones: 10 Record-Breaking Animals is a fun book to go with the activity!
