Montessori-Inspired Fruit Matching and Tasting for Toddlers

Working with real objects is an important way to encourage vocabulary and sensory experiences for toddlers. My 18-month-old granddaughter had a lot of fun with a special vocabulary and sensory experience using real fruit and Montessori toddler fruit cards.

Along with real fruit, this activity uses the Montessori Print Shop Toddler Fruit Cards from the MPS Toddler Bundle.

Montessori-Inspired Fruit Matching and Tasting for Toddlers

This was a fun activity for Zoey. It involves a series of steps, which could be divided into more than one session if that’s better for your toddler. These are the steps we used:

1. Read fruit book.

2. Lay out 6 fruit cards, naming each one. (You could use 3 or 4 if desired.)

3. Smell and feel each fruit. (Zoey LOVED the smelling part … check out the video below!)

4. Match fruits to the fruit cards.

5. Cut each fruit in half. Show the inside of each fruit to the child and say, “Inside the apple,” etc.

6. Cut off a piece of each fruit and offer it to the child, saying, “Would you like to taste the apple?” etc.
