Ten Apples Up On Top Sensory Bin & Table {Free Printables} – Montessori Monday

I LOVE Dr. Seuss books, including the book Ten Apples Up On Top. So I couldn’t resist making a Ten Apples Up On Top sensory bin and sensory table when it was time to change out my 2¾-year-old granddaughter’s sensory bin.

(Note: Sensory bins aren’t a traditional Montessori activity, but they can be great additions to Montessori homeschools and many types of preschools. And Montessori-inspired activities can be a big part of sensory bins. I focused on adding some Montessori-inspired activities to this Ten Apples Up On Top sensory bin and table.)

Ten Apples Up On Top Sensory Bin & Table – Video

Zoey had so much fun with this! It’s definitely one of her favorite sensory bins/sensory tables. I love that the lid of the sensory bin serves as a table for many of the activities. (You could do those activities on a regular table instead.)

Resources Used for Ten Apples Up On Top Sensory Bin & Table

I already had my DIY sensory table, so it was easy to make an apple sensory bin … especially since I had most of the needed materials. (I reused many of the materials from my fall sensory bin last year.)

Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss (writing as Theo. LeSieg)

• 10 Relaxable Squeeze Apples (I used 10 of each type of “apple” to go with Ten Apples Up On Top)
• Red Measuring Cups and Spoons
• Miniature red pom poms
• Montessori Services miniature basket
• Montessori Services baskets for cubes and DUPLO bricks
• Happy Baby Organic Puffs (Zoey still loves these!) or any cereal (I prefer organic cereals) for sensory bin base and snack
• Cinnamon sticks for smelling
• 10 Red pom poms for inside sensory bin
• 10 Acrylic apples for inside sensory bin
• Photograph of Child Standing
• Free Apple Printable with and/or without Numbers for Stacks
• 10 Spielgaben 1″ cubes (or another type of block or cube)
• 5 Red and 5 Blue DUPLO bricks for number rod extension
• Quick sticks for sensory table top
• Sugar tongs for transferring pom poms inside sensory bin

Montessori-Inspired Activities for Apples and Ten Apples Up On Top

I just took a photo of Zoey standing outdoors and then printed it out on a 5×7″ photo paper. She sometimes likes to use the quick sticks for transferring pom poms and sometimes likes to use her fingers. Either is fine!

Making a Stack of 10 Cubes with Apple Images

Theses are Spielgaben cubes that I simply taped the cut-out images to. You can use the printable with or without the numbers. Just choose which is best for your child.

Making a Red and Blue Stack with Apple Images (Montessori Number Rod Extension)

DUPLO bricks don’t replace the exactness of Montessori red and blue rods, but I think they can be a fun alternative for home use. Again, you can use the apples with or without the numbers on them for this activity.

Strengthening Hand and Fingers for Writing with Relaxable Squeeze Apples

I had Relaxable Squeeze Apples from last year’s fall sensory bin, so I added them to this one. Squeezing playdough also works well for strengthening hands and fingers for writing.

Sensory Experience Smelling Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon is a fun scent to use with apple activities, especially since we’re reminded of apple pie in the fall.

Spooning Cereal into a Container for Snack

Zoey absolutely loved having a cereal base for her sensory bin! For health reasons, this is best for a sensory bin at home. Zoey calls this sensory bin her kitchen, and she spends a lot of time with it.

Grace and Courtesy: Offering Snack to Grandma

I love that Zoey has been especially enthusiastic about sharing after our lessons on taking turns and working together. Recently, she was very excited to share her apple snack with her grandpa, and now she shared her cereal snack with me!

Dr. Seuss Resources

• If you’re using the sensory bin with lid to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, you might like to have a Dr. Seuss theme inside the sensory bin, too. You could start with red and white stripes of rice like I had in this sensory bin. You could use scooping, pouring, or whatever activities you’d like in the sensory bin itself.
