Studying individual continents is an activity that even preschoolers can enjoy. In Montessori education, children begin their study of continents with the continent globe and continent map before studying individual continents through specific continent maps and continent boxes. For posts with lots of DIY continent ideas, see DIY Montessori Globes, Continent Map Work, and Montessori Continent Boxes.
You can begin a specific continent study at any time during the year, although February would be an especially appropriate month for a study of Africa because of Black History Month. Following are some ideas for a Montessori-inspired study of Africa, including ideas for Black History Month.

We did a brief introduction to Africa this year, and I think it was my kids’ favorite continent study so far. I look forward to using many of these resources when we revisit Africa again.

I really like the idea of using different animals from each continent. I could use some geographical review as well. These are great activities for preschoolers.

Thanks, Miss Courtney! Preschoolers typically love working with animals from each continent. It’s amazing how much information they can absorb, isn’t it?!

Pinning this so I can look at the links when I’m less sleepy! My son has some interest in Africa due to a meerkat obsession, and he’s been interested in his world map of late, so this might be a good time to look for some more ideas that would appeal to him.
Deb says
Thanks so much, Jessica! I really appreciate your pinning my post. It’s awesome that you’re following your son’s interests so closely! 🙂
