I’ve loved Dr. Seuss books for many years. And Dr. Seuss books were some of my now-adult children’s favorite books, too.
The books in the photo are Dr. Seuss books that were lovingly read over and over in our home. If you’re wondering how they still look as good as they do, you can find out in this post: How to Help Your Child Treasure Books.

In honor of Read Across America, I’m sharing a couple of simple ideas for creating Dr. Seuss practical life activities based on Dr. Seuss’s books The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.
Cat in the Hat Pom Pom Transfer using Quick Sticks
The free printable I used for this activity is a top hat template from ABC Teach. I used a large plastic tray, quick sticks (which are very cool), and a 3½” diameter glass bowl from Montessori Services. I always keep a supply of pom poms of various colors and sizes on hand since they work well for many Montessori-inspired activities.
I like to add practical life skills like transferring to subject areas such as math and language, too. This activity, though, is a simple practical life transferring activity that has added interest because it’s literature based.
Cat in the Hat Pom Pom Transfer using a Strawberry Huller
For this activity, I used the Montessori Services 2¼” diameter glass bowl, clear acrylic tray and strawberry huller from the small tongs activities, and the top hat printable sized for a 5×7″ page. The clear acrylic trays are very versatile and a great size for many activities. For this particular activity, though, a medium-size tray would probably be best. Ideally, I’d use a red medium-size tray.
