Teaching toddlers about seasons is tricky in general. If you live in a warm climate, it’s even trickier – especially when you’re teaching toddlers about winter. Still, the Montessori 3-period lesson can give your toddler one of the best introductions to the winter season.
We’ve been introducing my 2-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, to winter concepts for a couple of months. Since we live in San Diego, we have to be creative in finding snow-themed activities. We’ve especially focused on a snowman sensory bin and Instant Snow activities. Some winter themes are introduced or reinforced through books and pictures. Here’s how we used the 3-period lesson to introduce winter pictures to Zoey.
Disclosure: I was given a copy of the Montessori Print Shop toddler bundle. All opinions are honest and my own. This post also contains affiliate links (at no cost to you).
We started with a DIY winter book using the Montessori Print Shop winter season cards from the Toddler Bundle. Zoey loves DIY books. Even though a book isn’t necessarily part of the Montessori 3-period lesson, we like to use it as an extra way to focus on the 1st period.

Note: You can print out an extra set of cards to make a winter matching activity as well. Also, the picture of the stocking cap has the label “toque.” We introduced the card by saying, “This word says ‘toque.’ We call it a stocking cap.”
