If you have a pond in your backyard or nearby, summer is a great time for a pond unit. And there are lots of wonderful ideas online for a Montessori-inspired pond unit. Most of the activities are appropriate for preschoolers through early elementary. Just choose activities that fit your child’s level and interests.
Montessori-Inspired Activities for a Pond Unit
Homeschool Creations has a free Pond Life Preschool Pack with printables that can be made into Montessori 3-part cards and hands-on activities for Montessori-inspired trays.
Counting Coconuts has a pond mini unit with lots of Montessori-inspired pond activities.
ABC Teach has free fish-, salamander-, and turtle nomenclature cards.
1+1+1=1 has a pond unit with a pond sensory bin and pond theme printables (including Montessori nomenclature and match-up cards).
Montessori Print Shop has free frog materials and a number of attractive but inexpensive materials related to frogs, fish, turtles, and snails.
PreKinders has a number of pond printables, songs, and activities that can be made into Montessori-inspired trays.
My Little Princess World has a pond unit with lots of Montessori-inspired activities. (This is an update in April 2012.)
Jada Roo Can Do has a frog-themed sensory bin. Update: Jada Roo Can Do added a 5 Little Ducks Sensory Bin.

The Adventures of Bear has a frog unit with lots of activities.

Lots of great ideas here! My kids have been visiting the grandparents, who have 2 ponds in their garden. Perhaps when we get home we will use some of these ideas to recreate our own ‘pond’ on our balcony!
