It’s amazing how much harder it seems for children to learn to tell time on analog clocks today. Even though many devices are digital, it’s important for children to be able to tell time with both types of clocks. I have some fabulous Montessori resources to help your children learn to tell time on any type of clock. There are resources here for preschool through elementary.
Disclosure: I’ve been given a copy of these materials to review. My opinions are honest and my own. This post contains affiliate links (at no cost to you).
I’ve loved all the materials I’ve used from Every Star Is Different. The Montessori telling time materials are very comprehensive!
Here are the Fabulous Telling Time Materials Available from Every Star Is Different:
The materials are designed for preschoolers through elementary-age kids. There are individual packs with parts of a clock, on the hour, half hour, 15 minute intervals, 5 minute intervals, to the minute, down to the second, Roman numerals, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division.
I just started working on telling time with an analog clock with my 5-year-old granddaughter, Zoey. She loved the materials and quickly understood how to tell hours throughout the day and night. I love that there are materials that go through telling time to the second as well as clocks with Roman numerals.
Montessori Telling Time: Parts of a Clock Printable Pack
Montessori Telling Time: Parts of a Clock Printable Pack:
- Includes multiple clock templates in color and black and white to meet the needs of every student in the classroom
- Provides several different color and black and white clock hand options to ensure homemade clocks match the clock used most in the classroom
- When cut out and pieced together, children have their own Montessori clock to use with activities
Zoey and I both love the printable Montessori clocks that come with this pack. There are many options to choose from. We chose to use the blue minute hand and red hour hand. There are even versions with fraction circles to use when building the clock. We’ll do that part later.
Zoey first placed the 5 bead bars around the clock. Then she worked on her own clock. Her first step was to write the numerals 5-60 around the outside of the clock.
Montessori Telling Time: On the Hour Printable Pack
Montessori Telling Time: On the Hour Printable Pack:
- Focuses on one hour increments of time around the clock
- Introduces digital and written out time concepts
- Encourages practical life application with daily schedule nomenclature and clip card activities
Zoey did two of the activities from this pack. First, she used some numbered clothespins with the clock hour clip cards that match analog and digital time. The numbered clothespins added interest. Zoey really liked the activity and quickly understood how hours work.
Zoey was very interested in the daily schedule sequencing cards. She placed each of the cards in order to make a timeline. As she placed each card, she adjusted the hands on the Montessori clock to show the correct hour.
These were just a couple of the activities from the pack. Zoey understood it well, so we’ll be moving on the the other packs. You can find a variety of activities in each pack.
