When my 2½-year-old granddaughter visits, I love to have snacks available that are both healthy and fun. Often, I just have healthy snacks available, but it’s awesome whenever they meet the healthy AND fun category. The berry yummy and healthy protein-rich popsicles we made recently are both healthy and fun!

Our Food Preparation Activities
Zoey has a special snack cupboard available where she can get many of her snacks. While popsicles obviously aren’t stored in the snack cupboard, they’re a snack children can be quite independent in making from a relatively early age. Zoey always wears the apron from the Montessori By Mom Helping Hands Toolbox for food preparation activities. I really recommend having a child-size apron for any cooking or baking activities. We typically use the Learning Tower so that Zoey can safely and comfortably reach everything. For this activity, Zoey did the work at her child-size work table.
How to Make Berry Yummy and Healthy Protein-Rich Popsicles
I add protein powder to almost everything I bake. I started doing that as a mom of elite athletes, and I’ve continued to use it as part of my regular baking practices. I typically use a vegan protein powder for baking. Whey protein also works great if you don’t mind dairy. For this recipe, I’m using whey powder and Greek yogurt, although vegan versions can be substituted if you prefer.
Ingredients:
- 2 c. plain Greek yogurt or vegan yogurt
- 3 tablespoons honey (Spun honey or thick raw honey works well.)
- 1 tablespoon whey powder (or vegan protein powder)
- ½ cup blueberries
- ½ cup raspberries
Instructions:
Add yogurt, honey, and protein powder to a bowl. Stir well. Mash blueberries and raspberries. Stir into yogurt mixture. Spoon into popsicle molds and freeze.
Zoey loves that she’s developed so many practical life skills that she uses for our food preparation activities.
I love watching Zoey’s reactions … the joy of pouring honey into a bowl!
We used a food chopper to chop/mash the blueberries. A food processor would work well also, although kids love using a food chopper.
A child-size potato masher would have been best. I still don’t have one, so Zoey used my adult-size one. She does well and has fun with it.
I left one of the holders (octopus legs) off for the photo so you could see what the popsicles look like before the holders are added. These are just so much fun!
These popsicle molds make larger popsicles … perfect for adults as well as kids who want regular-size popsicles.
These sea-life popsicles are not only fun but perfect for an ocean unit. Here Zoey’s enjoying a whale-shaped popsicle after working with her whale and water-bead sensory bin! 🙂

Popsicle Molds Used
We all love these Zoku Fish Pop Molds. They’re a nice size for kids … and so much fun!
These stainless steel popsicle molds are wonderful and very natural, although quite expensive. They should last a very long time, though!
