Penguin Game, Puzzle, and Editable Tracing Pack in Print or Cursive

Penguins are a popular and fun theme, whether you’re studying the Antarctic, the Southern Hemisphere, or winter. I’m excited that we have a new penguin printable pack with hands-on, Montessori-friendly activities in print or cursive!

Montessori-Inspired Printables at Living Montessori Now

My daughter, Chrissy (a former Montessori child), and I have partnered to bring you a series of Montessori-inspired printables. The printables are typically themed and use a number of Montessori principles (although you don’t need to be a Montessori teacher or homeschooler to use them):

• They use isolation of quality.
• They use photographs or realistic images to emphasize reality.
• They typically use traditional Montessori colors such as red for consonants and blue for vowels.
• They emphasize lowercase letters, which are what we introduce letter sounds with in Montessori education. (Children tend to pick up the uppercase letters without being introduced if they’re introduced to the lowercase letter sounds.)
• They often feature themed printable versions of Montessori materials.

Penguin Game, Puzzle, and Editable Tracing Printable Packs

This Montessori-friendly penguin game, puzzle, and editable tracing pack in print or cursive is designed to help children ages 3-9 with a number of math and language skills. While learning to identify a variety of penguins, younger children can focus on basic counting to 5, 10, 20, or 100 while older children can work on skip counting to reinforce multiplication facts.

The printables emphasize vocabulary for a variety of ages while younger children can practice tracing skills and older children can focus on reading and spelling.

• number puzzles 1-5, 1-10, 11-20, and skip counting 2’s through 10’s
• penguin hundred charts
• penguin editable tracing (editable for names or another language)
• an I Have, Who Has? penguin game.

Penguin Matching or Concentration

I designed the penguin matching or concentration to go with the Safari Ltd. Penguins TOOB. The figureines aren’t required, but they add a fun, hands-on addition to the activitiy. 

Matching Directions for Ages 3-6:

For young preschoolers, you can start with as few as 3-6 pairs. You could use these with toddlers, too, starting with 1 page (3 pairs).

Concentration Game for Multiple Ages

 For young preschoolers, start with as few as 3 pairs. Mix up all the cards and lay them out face down in any order in rows. The child turns over two cards at a time to find their matches, trying to remember where each matching card is. For older children, use as many pairs as your children can handle. There are 12 pairs in the pack, so you can use all 12 pairs at once if you wish. Mix the cards and lay them out face down in any order in rows.

Concentration can be played by one child, played cooperatively by more than one child, or played competitively. For competitive play, each player takes a turn by turning two cards over. If the cards match, the player picks up the cards and keeps them. If they don’t match, the player turns the cards back over. If the player gets a match, the player can go again until he or she doesn’t get a match. The game is over when all the cards have been matched and picked up. The winner is the player with the most matches at the end.

Penguin Number Puzzles 1-5, 1-10, 11-20, and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

These photos are from our Roadwork: Road Construction Printable Pack and show how manipulatives can be added to the puzzles. With the penguin puzzles, we’re using Montessori bead bars as in the following examples.

I love using Montessori bead bars with our 11-20 number puzzles! Of course, you could use little rocks or another manipulative, too.

If you have enough bead bars, they’re great for the skip counting by 2s through 10s!

Penguin Hundred Charts

Directions: The child can cut out and paste each number onto the blank page. For skip counting, the child can use glass gems to cover the skip counting pages (one glass gem over each multiple) or use stickers, dot markers, regular markers, crayons, or colored pencils to mark each multiple.

Penguin Editable Tracing Cards (or Name Signs)

There are 14 penguin photos and a cover page that can be used to make owl signs or a booklet. They’re editable for print, cursive, or another language! You can use them with the type of penguin or the child’s name. Directions for making editable signs are in the printable pack.

I Have, Who Has? Penguin Game Directions

For most preschoolers

For cooperative play (recommended for preschoolers), pass out the cards, laying them out in front of each person.

For each person’s turn, he or she “reads”: “I have____.” After that he or she “reads” the rest of the card: “Who has______?” to find out who has the named picture. The used card is then placed in a stack with all the other used cards. When the last picture is called, it should be found on the card at the bottom of the stack (the first picture called). Everyone wins!

Advanced preschoolers on up can play cooperatively or competitively if preferred. For competitive play, the first player to use up all his or her cards wins.

Playing I Have, Who Has? Road Construction Game

Even my 8-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, had fun playing the I Have, Who Has? Road Construction Game with Sophia and Caleb. I have Zoey play the teacher, which she loves. She did a great job of directing the game. We played the cooperative version, and they loved finding the last picture asked for at the bottom of the stack shown in the middle! (You can start the game with any card, and it will work!)
