Flower Cutting with Great-Grandma {Montessori on the Go} – Montessori Monday

My parents and their farm have always been very important to my now-adult kids and me. It was exciting to see the same thing happen with my granddaughter in late June/early July. Not only did Zoey get to fall in love with their South Dakota farm at age 2½, but she created lots of special memories with her great-grandparents. One of memories was from a Montessori activity … cutting flowers and using a flower cutting tray.

My mom grows lots of beautiful flowers on the farm, and she invited Zoey to cut some flowers for a flower arrangement. I thought of our nature cutting tray from this spring and asked if my mom had a tray we could use. My mom found a tray and some sharp scissors that were a good size for Zoey.

Zoey was excited to get started!

Our previous work with a cutting tray with strings of beads, cutting strip work, and work with a nature cutting tray helped Zoey feel successful with flower cutting.

(Note: In case you’re wondering, Zoey’s outfit is from Gymboree.)

In the end, we had a beautiful tray of flowers ready for flower arranging.

(Note: For nature cutting trays, I often use a Multicraft tray, some Montessori Services baskets for whatever flowers and treasures we find, scissors for Zoey, and adult-size scissors for me.)
