Science has become so exciting for me lately! I’m in love with the resources available to easily make attractive hands-on activities. I wish they would have been available when I was a Montessori teacher or homeschooling my now-adult kids.
But I get to use them with my grandkids from preschool through elementary, so I still have years of fun, hands-on learning ahead! Right, now we’re starting a mini vertebrate unit with some awesome new materials!
Disclosure: I’ve been given a copy of the Every Star Is Different materials to review. My opinions are honest and my own. This post contains affiliate links (at no cost to you).
I’ve loved all the materials I’ve used from Every Star Is Different. The vertebrate printables are great for any Montessori classroom or homeschool program. You can get the entire vertebrates bundle when it’s available here. The individual vertebrate packs are linked there or in the blog post below.
Here are the fabulous vertebrates materials available from Every Star Is Different:
My 5-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, and I have just started using the printables so far. We’ll even have some activities that my toddler grandkids (Sophia at 18 months and Caleb at 15 months) can have fun with, too. For example, some of the booklets can be projects for Zoey to make while I can print out a completed booklet to read to Sophia and Caleb.
Caleb and Sophia both love books and will enjoy hearing about different types of vertebrates. For them, they’ll mainly learn the names of the animals. We’ll match them with Schleich animal figures whenever I have one that matches.
Montessori-Inspired Intro to Vertebrates Printable Pack
Montessori-inspired Intro to Vertebrates Printable Pack:
- Introduces terms such as living, nonliving, vertebrate, mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, and fish
- Includes all you need to help children learn and understand animals around them
- Provides writing and drawing opportunities
This pack is part of the Intro to Biology Printable Pack Bundle. If you have that already, you’ll have the activities in the Montessori-Inspired Intro to Vertebrates Printable Pack.
I love this activity for introducing vertebrates. I used vertebrate figures from a variety of Safari Ltd. TOOBS. I appreciate having the description cards as a quick review for myself and an easy way to introduce the activity by reading the description card.
Montessori-inspired Mammals Printable Pack Bundle
Montessori-inspired Mammals Printable Pack Bundle:
- Provides fantastic materials for teaching children about habitats
- Introduces weight and size measurement
- Includes spelling and writing activities
There are so many different mammal activities and different levels of mammal activities! This is one that’s perfect for a variety of levels during the winter or for anyone in the Southern Hemisphere right now. It’s also great if you simply want to think about winter, too!
Montessori-inspired Birds Printable Pack Bundle
Montessori-inspired Birds Printable Pack Bundle:
- Includes adult and baby bird activities
- Focuses on bird characteristics, nests, and eggs
- Provides multiple layers of learning
For our mini vertebrate unit, I just set up some animal classification and vertebrate books on a shelf along with a few activities. I’ll rotate the activities regularly throughout the unit. The bird activities shown are photographed in action below.
I love these books: Book of Bones: 10 Record-Breaking Animals, Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth, Bone by Bone: Comparing Animal Skeletons, and Let’s Classify Animals.
Each of the vertebrate packs has a “Who Am I?” activity. They’re great! We did the Who Am I? Backyard Bird sorting, and Zoey loved it! This was a fun way to review our backyard bird unit. We used the Safari Ltd. Backyard Birds TOOB and The Little Book of Backyard Bird Songs. My grandkids all love that book so much that it’s still out. The cards in this bundle match the Safari Ltd. Backyard Birds TOOB, which is awesome!
I read the descriptions of each bird, and Zoey matched the cards and bird figures. Then we listened to each bird song (in the book where available or on YouTube). It was a great activity! I love that there are “Who Am I?” activities for each vertebrate pack.
There’s such a great variety of activities in each pack! This activity gave us the chance to continue our work with Montessori grammar symbols. Zoey was very proud of her completed work! We used the wood grammar symbols, although you can use paper ones. If you have the original grammar printables we used, there are printable symbols you can use.
Montessori-inspired Reptiles Printable Pack Bundle
Montessori-inspired Reptiles Printable Pack Bundle:
- Introduces each type of reptile through multiple activities
- Focuses on the beauty and personalities of reptiles so not to frighten young children

We haven’t started our reptile work yet, although I looked through the printable bundle. I can’t wait to print out the snake colors book! I found it fascinating to see the different colors/types of snakes, and I’m sure my grandkids will be fascinated, too!
Montessori-inspired Amphibians Printable Pack Bundle
Montessori-inspired Amphibians Printable Pack Bundle:
- Introduces all three types of amphibians
- Explains the differences between frogs and toads
- Includes continent sorting activity
Montessori-inspired Fish Printable Pack Bundle
